DIY Garage Hothouse Setup for Starting Tomatoes and Peppers on a Budget
A practical garage hothouse setup for Zone 5b that uses smart plugs, Mylar, and a Wi-Fi thermometer to start tomatoes and peppers reliably every spring.
Late March in the Denver-Wheat Ridge area is a strange in-between season. The calendar says spring. The weather says otherwise. And if you want tomatoes and peppers in the ground by late May, you need seedlings started now — which means you need a controlled environment that your garage can actually become, if you set it up right.
In Zone 5b, the window between last frost and first frost is short enough that every week matters. Starting tomatoes and peppers from seed gives you more variety options and better-timed transplants than buying starts from a nursery. But seeds need warmth — consistently 70 to 80 degrees — to germinate and grow without getting leggy or stalling out. Most garages in February and March don't naturally provide that. The question is how to get there without spending a fortune or babysitting a thermometer all day.
The setup in this video is built around three priorities: mobility, ease of use, and as much automation as the budget allows. The core of it is a shelving unit lined with heavy black plastic on the outside and Mylar on the inside. The black plastic does double duty — it holds in heat and moisture. The Mylar bounces light around the interior so shorter seedlings in the back or on lower shelves still get usable light, which is the practical fix for leggy seedlings caused by taller plants blocking the light source.
All the components — a small smart heater, heating mats under the seed trays, and grow lights — are plugged into Wi-Fi-enabled smart plugs that run on a schedule. The heater runs in cycles, about 10 minutes on, two or three times per hour, which is enough to hold the interior temperature in that 70 to 80 degree range consistently throughout the day without running the heater nonstop. The grow lights run on their own schedule. Set it up once, and the system mostly runs itself.
The one component that isn't automated — and probably shouldn't be — is a simple Wi-Fi thermometer with temperature alerts. It sits inside the hothouse and sends a notification if the temperature drops to 55 degrees or below. That's the threshold where something has gone wrong: a heater that tripped off, a smart plug that lost its schedule, a power blip. At 55 degrees, seedlings aren't dead yet, but they're stressed. Getting an alert means there's time to go out and fix the problem before losing the whole tray. The batteries get swapped out every year whether they seem to need it or not. That cheap piece of gear has saved seedlings more than once.
The hard lesson worth passing along: the automation is only as reliable as the setup it's running. Early on, not paying close enough attention to whether the smart plugs actually reconnected after a Wi-Fi outage was a real problem. The schedule looks fine on the app, but if the plug lost its connection and didn't recover, the heater isn't actually cycling. A thermometer alert is the backup that catches that failure. The point isn't to scare anyone off smart plugs — they're worth it — but to not assume the automation means you never have to check. The thermometer is what turns a passive system into one you can actually trust.
For this season, a few practical takeaways if you're building or recalibrating a similar setup. First, Mylar is cheap and makes a real difference for light distribution — don't skip it if you're using shelves. Second, heating mats under the trays matter more than ambient air temperature for germination, but you still need the ambient warmth to keep seedlings growing after they sprout. Third, schedule your smart plugs to match the actual light and temperature cycles your seeds need, not just what's convenient. And fourth, put a thermometer inside the space with alerts enabled before you start anything — not after your first bad week.
