How to Rebuild a Raised Bed the Right Way: Soil, Drainage, and Structure

Rebuilding a raised bed isn't just about fresh soil. Here's how to set up the full system so your bed actually performs all season.

Most raised bed problems don't start with bugs or bad weather. They start with what's underneath — compacted soil, poor drainage, a structure that's slowly falling apart. By the time you notice the symptoms, you're already mid-season and out of options. The smarter move is to deal with all of it before the first seed goes in.

In Denver and Wheat Ridge, we get a short, intense growing season with wild temperature swings and soil that drains fast in some spots and holds water like a bathtub in others. A raised bed gives you control over that — but only if the foundation is built right. A bed that's too shallow, or that sits on compacted ground with nowhere for water to go, isn't really giving you any advantage over planting in the ground. You're just making the problem smaller and more expensive.

This particular bed needed a full teardown and rebuild. That meant pulling everything out — old soil, root debris, whatever was left from last season — and starting from scratch. Before any new soil went back in, the focus was on the base layer. Adequate depth matters more than most people expect: you want at least 12 inches of workable growing medium for most vegetables, and deeper is better for anything with a taproot. The drainage layer at the bottom, combined with the structure of the bed itself, is what keeps that depth from turning into a soggy mess after a heavy rain or a few days of over-watering.

The rebuild also meant checking the bed structure itself. Over time, boards warp, joints loosen, and corners start to push out from soil pressure. A bed that's slowly opening up at the seams is losing soil, losing structure, and eventually going to fail at exactly the wrong moment. If the frame isn't solid before you fill it, everything you add on top is working against itself.

Here's where it gets honest: one easy mistake is putting down a weed barrier that's too tight. It feels like the right call — fewer weeds, cleaner bed. But if that barrier slows drainage even slightly, you end up with standing water at the root zone, and that's a faster way to kill plants than any weed ever was. Landscape fabric, if you use it at all, needs to be the kind that breathes. And even then, a layer of coarse material underneath — gravel, wood chips, something with airspace — does more for drainage than any fabric on its own.

For the soil mix itself, the goal is something that holds moisture without holding water. In practical terms, that means a blend with enough compost to feed plants and retain some moisture, but enough structure — aged wood chips, coarse perlite, or similar — to keep it from compacting over time. Straight compost alone will compact after one season and start to choke out roots by midsummer. Balance is the point.

If you're getting ready for this season, here's where to put your attention: Check the depth of your existing beds before you plant anything. If you're hitting resistance at eight inches or less, your plants are going to struggle come August when they need to push deeper for water. Check your drainage by watering heavily and watching — if it's pooling for more than a few minutes, something's off at the base. And look at your bed structure honestly. A wobbly frame is a problem waiting to happen, not a problem to deal with later.
