Why Your Tomato Seedlings Are Leggy (And It's Not the Seeds)
Windowsill seedlings look fine until they don't. Here's why grow lights beat window light every time for starting tomatoes indoors.
Every beginner starts tomatoes by a window. It makes sense on the surface — the sun comes through there, plants need sun, problem solved. Except it isn't solved. What you get instead are seedlings that stretch tall and thin toward the glass, pale stems that can barely hold themselves up, and transplants that struggle from day one. That's not thriving. That's a plant in trouble.
The core issue is that human eyes are remarkably good at adapting to low light. We walk into a room with a south-facing window on a February afternoon and think it looks plenty bright. Tomato seedlings disagree. What looks bright to us often measures out to a fraction of the light intensity those plants actually need to build strong stems and healthy leaf structure during their first few weeks of life.
In Zone 5b, where we're typically starting tomatoes indoors in late February or March, this problem gets worse. Days are still short, sun angles are still low, and cloud cover in the Denver-Wheat Ridge area is inconsistent enough that your seedlings are spending their early life adapting to constantly shifting conditions. Morning light, afternoon shadow, a week of overcast skies — the plant is chasing a moving target the entire time. That instability is part of what drives the stretching.
When a seedling stretches toward a light source, it's allocating resources to stem length instead of stem strength. The technical term is etiolation. The practical result is a plant with a weak foundation going into transplant. Thin-stemmed tomatoes recover poorly from the stress of being moved outdoors, and that early weakness can follow a plant through the whole season — affecting how well it sets fruit and how it handles heat, wind, and disease pressure later on.
The fix is full spectrum LED grow lights on a timer. Not complicated, not expensive relative to the seed investment, and genuinely consistent in a way that window light never will be. The goal is stable, reliable light that the plant can count on every single day.
For placement, keep the lights close — roughly 2 to 4 inches above the tops of the seedlings. This is closer than most people expect, but it's what actually delivers enough intensity to matter. As the seedlings grow, you raise the light. Run them 14 to 16 hours per day. The timer matters here because consistency is the whole point. If you're relying on remembering to turn the lights on and off, you're just trading one form of inconsistency for another.
The honest version of this lesson is that most people figure it out after one bad season of leggy transplants. A flat of pale, floppy seedlings that collapse when you try to harden them off will teach you faster than any article can. The window looks convincing right up until the results don't match the expectation. Grow lights feel like overkill until you see what they actually produce.
Here's what to take into this season: if you're starting tomatoes indoors in Zone 5, set up the lights before you sow the seeds. Don't wait to see how the window performs. Position them 2 to 4 inches above your seed tray, plug them into a basic outlet timer set for 14 to 16 hours, and leave them alone. Check for true leaf development and stem thickness as your benchmarks — a seedling that's compact, green, and standing up straight is on track. One that's leaning toward any light source is telling you something's wrong.
