Why Your Plants Aren't Responding to Fertilizer (Check This First)

Pouring on fertilizer but still getting weak plants? The problem might not be nutrients at all — it's probably pH locking them out.

You do everything right. You amend your beds, you fertilize on schedule, you water consistently — and your plants still look like they're barely surviving. That's a frustrating place to be, and it's also a really common one. Before you buy more fertilizer or start diagnosing some exotic deficiency, there's one number you need to check first: soil pH.

pH is basically a measure of how acidic or alkaline your soil is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral. Most vegetables want to be somewhere between 6 and 7 — slightly acidic to neutral. That range isn't arbitrary. It's where the chemistry of your soil actually allows nutrients to dissolve and move into plant roots. Outside that window, nutrients that are physically present in your soil become chemically unavailable. The plants can't access them. You can keep adding fertilizer and it won't matter.

Here in Denver and Wheat Ridge, our native soils tend to run alkaline — often in the 7.5 to 8.5 range. Raised beds give us a lot of control over this, but that doesn't mean we're automatically in the clear. Depending on what you used to fill your beds, how long they've been running, and what kind of water you're irrigating with — Denver tap water leans alkaline — your bed pH can drift over time without you noticing. The plants notice, though.

The visual symptoms of a pH problem look a lot like nutrient deficiency, because that's essentially what it is — just not the kind you fix by adding more of a nutrient. Yellowing between the leaf veins on younger leaves is a classic sign of iron or manganese lockout, both of which get worse as pH climbs. Tomatoes and peppers are particularly sensitive to this. If you've ever had plants that just stalled out in midsummer for no obvious reason, pH is worth investigating.

The fix starts with actually testing. A basic soil pH meter from a garden center runs around ten to fifteen dollars and is good enough for practical use in a home garden. Inexpensive paper test strips work too. If you want more precision — or you're trying to diagnose a real problem — your local cooperative extension office can point you to a lab test that gives you a full soil profile for not much money. It's worth doing at least once.

If your pH is too high, the most common correction is elemental sulfur. It works slowly — think weeks to months — so it's not a quick fix mid-season. Peat moss and pine bark also acidify over time as they break down, which is one reason they show up so often in raised bed mixes. For a faster short-term adjustment, some gardeners use diluted vinegar or acidic fertilizers like ammonium sulfate, though those are more situational. If your pH is too low, which is less common around here but does happen, lime brings it back up.

Here's the mistake worth mentioning: I spent a full season throwing fertilizer at a raised bed that just wasn't performing. The plants were pale, growth was slow, and I kept assuming I needed more of something — more nitrogen, more compost, more of whatever. It wasn't until I finally tested the pH — which I'd been meaning to do for months — that I found the bed was sitting at 7.8. Once I brought it down into range, the same plants in the same soil started actually growing. That's a whole season I gave away because I skipped a ten-dollar test.

Practical takeaways for this season: Test your beds now if you haven't already, especially if you're seeing unexplained yellowing or slow growth. Match your amendments to what the test actually shows rather than guessing. If you're growing blueberries, they want pH around 4.5 to 5.5 — significantly lower than most vegetables — so they need separate attention. And keep in mind that pH management is ongoing, not a one-time fix. Test every season or two and make small adjustments rather than waiting for a problem to develop.
